What the law requires

Abrasive wheels are work equipment, so the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 apply. Regulation 9 says every employer must make sure anyone who uses work equipment, and anyone who supervises or manages its use, has had adequate training in how to use it, the risks involved and the precautions to take.

HSE's guidance, HSG17, Safety in the use of abrasive wheels, covers the training people need and the procedure for mounting wheels.

Who needs abrasive wheels training?

Anyone who uses an angle grinder, bench grinder, cut-off saw or disc cutter at work, and the people who supervise them. It is a common requirement on construction sites, in workshops and in maintenance teams.

This course gives you the knowledge. Your employer should still check you can mount and use the wheel safely on the machines you will actually use, and only trained, competent people should mount wheels.
