Our free CITB mock tests are on the Test Hub. You get 20 full CITB Operatives mocks of 50 questions each, plus 10 mocks for the Level 1 health and safety exam, with instant feedback and no login. The real CITB Health, Safety and Environment test is 50 questions in 45 minutes, and you need 45 correct to pass. Here's how the test works, how to book it and how to revise.

How the CITB health and safety test works

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, often called the CSCS test or the touch screen test, is what most CSCS card applicants have to pass. CITB says every version has 50 questions and lasts 45 minutes. The pass mark is 90%, so you need at least 45 right. That leaves room for five mistakes, and no more.

In the Operatives version, the CITB health and safety test questions cover five core knowledge areas, from the working environment and occupational health to general safety and high-risk activities.

You sit it on screen at a Pearson VUE test centre or an approved Internet Test Centre, not at home. Before it starts, you can run a short on-screen tutorial to see how it works. It's not a practice test, and once the real test starts you can't pause it. You can't refer to any notes either.

If English isn't your first language, you can book a voiceover in one of several languages. The questions on screen stay in English.

At the end, you get written confirmation of whether you passed. The score report also shows the subjects where you dropped marks, which is useful if you need a resit.

Which CITB test do you need?

There are three versions. They share the same format and pass mark, but not the same questions.

If you're going for the Labourer card, the green card, it's the Operatives test.

Our free CITB operatives mock test and CSCS practice questions

Our Test Hub has two free mock exams, one for each part of the green card.

  • CITB HS&E Operatives mock: 20 tests of 50 questions, covering topics such as working at height and scaffolds, fire and emergency procedures, hazardous substances (COSHH), and noise, vibration and health risks.
  • Level 1 Health and Safety mock: 10 tests of 30 questions, covering legal responsibilities and safety signs, health, welfare and first aid basics, manual handling and reporting hazards.

Both give instant feedback and a full review of your answers. There's no login and no limit on attempts.

Our questions are written in the style of the real CITB test questions, not copied from it. CITB also says the wording in the live test can differ from its own revision materials, although the meaning stays the same. So learn why each answer is right rather than memorising the answer.

Our mocks cover the Operatives test only. For a Specialist or Managers and Professionals test, use CITB's own materials, listed below.

HS&E test revision: how to prepare for the CITB test

  1. Start with the official content. CITB's GT100 book holds everything in the Operatives test as questions and answers. Specialist candidates also need the section for their trade. CITB sells it as a book, a download and an app with timed test simulations.
  2. Check your material is current. CITB tests you on the latest edition of its revision materials. A book handed down from a mate a few years ago may be out of date.
  3. Take a full mock early. Sit one of our 50-question mocks against the clock before you've revised much. It shows you where your gaps are.
  4. Work on the weak topics, then sit another full mock. Repeat until you're passing comfortably, not scraping 45.
  5. Look at CITB's free demo test. It isn't scored, but it shows the question styles and how the screen looks on the day.

CITB recommends a relevant training course and working through all the sample questions before you book. For the green card, you'll need our Level 1 Health and Safety course, or another approved one, alongside the test anyway.

Booking your CITB test and what to bring

You can book with CITB's test provider, Pearson, online or by phone, or directly with an Internet Test Centre. You'll need your email address, a UK postal address, the test type and your chosen centre. If you've sat the test before, or held a CSCS, CPCS or CISRS card, have your CITB registration number ready.

Or we can book your CITB test for you. You pick a date, upload your ID and details to our dashboard, and our team calls to confirm your slot at the nearest Pearson centre.

On the day:

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early with your booking confirmation.
  • Bring original, in-date ID in the same name as your booking. A passport, a UK or European photocard driving licence, or an eVisa works on its own. Without one, you'll need two forms of secondary ID from CITB's ID policy.
  • If you're under 16, bring a completed parental consent form.

Get the ID wrong and you won't sit the test or get your money back. You can reschedule or cancel free online up to 72 hours before your slot.

If you fail, CITB won't let you resit within 48 hours. If you pass, keep your score report. Your pass counts towards a CSCS card application for two years.

Practise, then book

Pass two or three full mocks comfortably before you book the real thing. Start on our free CITB mock tests. Once your mock scores hold steady and you want the whole green card dealt with, our CSCS Green Card package puts the online Level 1 course and exam together with a CITB test slot at a Pearson centre, then sends off your card application. For the full route from course to card, read how to get a CSCS card.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CITB mock test free?

Yes. Every mock test on our Test Hub is free, with no login and no limit on attempts. There are 20 CITB Operatives mocks of 50 questions each and 10 Level 1 mocks of 30 questions. You get instant feedback and a full review of your answers, so you can see exactly which topics need more work.

How many questions are in the CITB test, and what's the pass mark?

Every version of the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test has 50 questions and a 45-minute time limit. The pass mark is 90%, which means at least 45 correct answers. That's the same for the Operatives, Specialist and Managers and Professionals tests, although the questions differ between them.

Is the CSCS test the same as the CITB test?

Yes. People say CSCS test, touch screen test or CITB test, but they mean the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. CSCS doesn't run any tests itself. For the green card you also need the Level 1 Award, which has its own separate exam, and our Test Hub has mocks for both.

Can I take the CITB test online at home?

No. You sit the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test in person, at a Pearson VUE test centre or an approved Internet Test Centre. You can revise and take mock tests online from any device beforehand. The Level 1 Award exam for the green card is different, and our course lets you sit it remotely.

What happens if I fail the CITB test?

You'll need to book and pay for another test, and CITB won't let you resit within 48 hours. Your score report shows the subjects where you dropped marks, so revise those first. Then sit a couple of full mock tests to check you're passing comfortably before you rebook.

Which CITB test do I need for a CSCS green card?

The Operatives test. It's the version for the Labourer card, which most people call the green card, as well as the Apprentice and Trainee cards and most skilled trade cards. Supervisors, managers and some specialist trades need a different version, which CSCS's Card Finder will confirm.

Are the real CITB test questions the same as the mock test?

No. Our mock questions are written in the same style and cover the same topics, but they aren't copies of the live test. CITB says even its own revision materials may be worded differently from the test, with the same meaning. Understanding why an answer is right matters more than memorising it.

How long is a CITB test pass valid?

Two years, if you're using it for a CSCS card. CSCS wants a pass from inside that window when you apply for or renew most cards. The one exception is the first Labourer card renewal, where CSCS accepts the original pass for up to three years.
