You can renew a CSCS card from six months before its expiry date until a year after. Since 1 February 2025, a Labourer card renews with a Labourer Declaration Form from your employer or main contractor. You also need a CITB Operatives test pass. For a first two-year card it can be up to three years old. If you hold a five-year Labourer card, or held one before February 2025, it must be under two years old.

So the fastest renewal is decided before you apply. Have a test pass that's still in date and the right paperwork in hand, and the application is the easy part.

Who can renew a CSCS card, and who can't

Not every card renews. Here's what CSCS's renewal page says.

CSCS card renewal rules for the main cards, accurate as of October 2026.

CardHow long it lastsRenewable? What renewal needs
LabourerTwo years on first issueYesA Labourer Declaration Form and an Operatives test pass from the last three years (two years for a five-year card)
Blue or Gold Skilled WorkerFive yearsYesThe qualification you used last time and the right level of test from the last two years
SupervisoryFive yearsYesThe same qualification and the Specialist Supervisory test from the last two years
ManagerFive yearsYesThe same qualification and the Managers and Professionals test from the last two years
Professionally Qualified PersonFive yearsNo, you apply for a new oneCurrent professional body membership and the Managers and Professionals test from the last two years
Apprentice, Trainee, Industry Placement, Provisional, Experienced Worker, Experienced Technical, Supervisor or ManagerSix months to five yearsNoA two-year Trainee can get one new three-year Trainee card

If your card says "No" in the third column, you're not renewing. You're applying for whichever card your job and qualifications now support.

CSCS also says a new role or a new qualification may mean a new card rather than a renewal. The which CSCS card you need guide lists every card and what it asks for.

How to renew your CSCS card in the My CSCS app

Individuals renew in the My CSCS app. Employers, training providers and third parties use CSCS Online, which also works if the app gives you trouble.

  1. Check the expiry date on your card. CSCS won't renew it more than six months early.
  2. Check the card still fits your job. CSCS's Card Finder confirms it.
  3. Find your CITB test pass and the test ID number at the top of the certificate.
  4. Get your evidence ready. That's the declaration form for a Labourer card, or last time's qualification for a skilled or management card.
  5. Renew in the app and pay the application fee by debit or credit card.
  6. Your digital card works as soon as CSCS approves it, and CSCS says the card itself should reach you within five working days.

Labourer card renewal: the declaration form does the work

Your employer completes the Labourer card renewal declaration form. If you're self-employed, a main contractor you're working for, or about to work for, fills it in. CSCS also accepts a letter on company headed paper that names you and gives the employer's contact details.

Upload it with the application, because CSCS won't take it by email or post. An incomplete form isn't processed, and a form showing you're not labouring gets the application queried or declined.

When you renew a first two-year card, CSCS still accepts the Operatives pass you used to get it, as long as it's no more than three years old. If you hold a five-year Labourer card, or held a Labourer card before February 2025, you need a pass under two years old.

The Labourer card page adds one catch. If your card was issued on an approved alternative course with an expiry date, CSCS says that course can only be used once. You'd retake it at renewal, or switch to the lifetime Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment.

Renewing Blue, Gold, Supervisor and Manager cards

These five-year cards renew with the qualification you used last time, plus a CITB test from the last two years. Supervisors and managers each have their own test, as the table shows. Most Blue and Gold cards take the Operatives test, but some trades need a Specialist test, and the Card Finder tells you which.

What slows a CSCS card renewal down

  • A test pass that's out of date. CSCS counts back from the day you apply.
  • A missing or half-filled declaration form.
  • Applying outside the window, too early or more than a year late.
  • The wrong card, because your job or qualifications have changed.
  • A request for a copy of your qualification certificate, which CSCS makes for some occupations so the right title goes on the card. Keep a scan ready.

If your CSCS card has expired

Within a year of expiry, you renew as normal. After that, a normal renewal isn't possible. For a Labourer card, CSCS says you'll need to appeal with evidence that you work as a labourer. For any card, an appeal to renew more than 12 months after expiry needs a letter explaining why you couldn't renew in time. It also needs witness testimony from your most recent employer on headed paper, a CV and copies of your qualifications. CSCS won't consider documents you didn't send first time, and the panel's decision is final.

Starting again

CSCS doesn't say whether someone whose Labourer card lapsed over a year ago can skip the appeal and apply for a first two-year card. Ask CSCS before you pay for anything.

If you start again, the guide to getting a CSCS card covers each step. A Labourer card needs the Level 1 Award or an approved alternative, plus an Operatives pass from the last two years. An old Level 1 certificate still counts, because it has lifetime validity. If you're starting from nothing, the CSCS Green Card package puts the course, the test booking and the card application in one order.

Three years or five? CSCS's own pages disagree

CSCS gives two different lengths for a renewed Labourer card.

The renewal page says a card still used for labouring after two years "can be renewed for a further three years via My CSCS by providing a completed Labourer Declaration Form".

The Labourer card page says people still labouring "may renew for a further five years by completing the Labourer card renewal declaration form".

Both pages agree on the form and the three-year test pass. Neither says which length is current, so don't plan around either number. Once your renewal is approved, the expiry date in the My CSCS app is the one that counts. If you need to know before you apply, ask CSCS.

Booking your CITB test

No in-date pass, no renewal. If yours is too old, book the test first.

CITB doesn't say how far ahead you'll find a free slot, but its booking terms set out the rules. A booking only stands once you get written confirmation. If you fail, you can't resit within 48 hours. You can reschedule up to 72 hours before the test, but not after that.

We book the CITB Operatives test and confirm your date at a nearby Pearson centre. That's the level for the Labourer card and most Blue and Gold cards. Practise first on the free CITB mock tests, 20 Operatives mocks with no login.

Sort the test pass and the paperwork first, and the renewal is the quick part.

Frequently asked questions

When can I renew my CSCS card?

From six months before the expiry date printed on your card, up to a year after it. CSCS won't renew any earlier. Once the year is up, you'd use CSCS's appeals process instead, with a letter explaining the delay and witness testimony from your most recent employer.

How do I renew my CSCS card online?

Use the My CSCS app for your own card, or CSCS Online if you're an employer or training provider. You'll need your CITB test ID number, the evidence your card asks for, such as a Labourer Declaration Form or your qualification, and a debit or credit card to pay the fee.

Do I need to retake the CITB test to renew my CSCS card?

Only if your pass is too old. Skilled, supervisor and manager cards need a pass under two years old. For a first two-year Labourer card, CSCS still takes the Operatives pass you first applied with, if it's no more than three years old. If you hold a five-year Labourer card, or held one before February 2025, you need a pass under two years old.

How long does it take to renew a CSCS card?

CSCS doesn't publish a processing time for renewals. It does say your digital card works as soon as the application is approved, and the card itself is due within five working days of approval. An incomplete declaration form or an out of date test pass holds up approval.

Can I renew a CSCS card that has expired?

Yes, if it expired less than a year ago. CSCS renews cards up to a year after the printed expiry date. Beyond that, a Labourer card holder has to appeal with evidence of labouring work. Any appeal to renew more than a year late also needs a letter explaining the delay and witness testimony from your most recent employer.

What is a Labourer Declaration Form?

It's the CSCS form your employer completes to confirm you still work as a labourer. If you're self-employed, a main contractor you're working for, or about to work for, completes it. CSCS also accepts a letter on company headed paper. Either one is uploaded with your renewal, and CSCS doesn't process incomplete forms.

Can I renew a Trainee or Provisional card?

Not the Provisional card, which lasts six months, and not the five-year Trainee card. The two-year Trainee card is the exception, and CSCS's Trainee card page calls it renewable. When it expires, you can get one new three-year Trainee card by showing you're registered on an NVQ, an SVQ or an agreed alternative. That three-year card can't be renewed.

How much does it cost to renew a CSCS card?

The official CSCS application fee is £36, and CSCS doesn't list a separate fee for renewals. Route costs vary on top of that. If your test pass is out of date, the CITB test is an extra fee, and services that handle bookings or applications for you charge more.
