What a full EFAW qualification involves
Under HSE's guidance on selecting a first aid training provider, an EFAW course runs for at least six hours of training and assessment over one day, and the certificate is valid for three years. Blended learning, part online and part face to face, is an accepted way to deliver it, and HSE strongly recommends that the practical skills are assessed in person.
So if your first aid needs assessment calls for a certificated EFAW first aider, this course covers the knowledge and the practical skills still need assessing face to face. If you are refreshing a qualification you already hold, or you are an appointed person, it works well on its own.
EFAW or FAW?
Every employer must provide adequate and appropriate first aid under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, and the first aid needs assessment decides the level. Lower risk workplaces such as offices and shops can often rely on EFAW. Construction sites, workshops and other higher risk workplaces usually need First Aid at Work (FAW), which covers a wider range of injuries and illness.
